Artificial insemination , or AI, describes a procedure where sperm is inserted into a woman's reproductive tract to help her get pregnant by means other than natural insemination (sex). In a nutshell, sperm is placed into the cervix (intracervical insemination, or ICI) or washed, then inserted into a woman's uterus (intrauterine insemination, or IUI), usually with a catheter.
